The aim of this study was to examine the liquid crystal display (LCD) height of a personal computer by analyzing the work posture and electromyogram (EMG) activities. Measurements of the viewing distance, viewing angle, head angle, neck angle, and EMG activities of the neck muscles of visual display terminal (VDT) operators were compared for several experimental conditions. The experimental conditions included three different display heights, 870 mm height adjusted for each subject, 1000 mm from the floor to the center of the display, and two types of manuscript positions—using manuscript stand and not using one. The experimental VDT has a 15-inch LCD. Ten healthy students aged 20 to 21 years (average age 20.8 years) were selected as the subjects, and they performed tasks for several experimental condition. When the position of the display was lower, the viewing distance tended to be short. It was shown that the subjects gazed downward and with their heads upright in all the experimental conditions. Further, no significant difference was observed in the value of EMG activities for the neck muscle during each experimental condition. The height of the display should be adjusted to each user with 1000 mm as an upper limit. The appropriate height can be estimated by summing of the sitting height and the chair height of each user.
The authors propose a new method of personal identification using the visible characteristics of the worker’s teeth. The use of dental profile for personal identification has advantage in its easy operation (the user just show his teeth) and in its low error rates. Individual’s dental profile does not change frequently. Our algorithm converts data captured from an image of the subject’s teeth to a dental profile. The face image of a subject in front of a monitor is captured by a single CCD camera. Corrections of position and aspect of the subjects is conducted using image processor. The image obtained by a CCD camera was transformed to a binary image. The incidence ratio shows fluctuations that correspond to the teeth boundary. Each subject has a unique incidence ratio curve. The incidence ratio curve can be used as a key to a personal identification. Our method appears promising for future application in personal identification, in spite of present incomplete personal identifications.
We introduced a stretch exercise as a measure for lumbago-prevention for the aging employees, who are vulnerable to low back pain, and evaluated its effect by measuring sit-and-reach before and after introducing the exercise. The subjects are 54 male employees in the printing section of A newspaper company (average age 46.6±9.4). Before the introduction of the stretch exercise, sit-and-reach was 6.7±8.3cm (average) in 1998. According to 5 level evaluations in age, the worst accounts for 6.8%, level 2 for 20.5%, level 3 for 38.6%, level 4 for 29.5%, and the best for 4.5%. With the average moved to 7.1±8.0cm in 2000 and 8.2±8.2cm in 2003, we recognized up-trend (p<0.1) as the result of repeated dispersion analysis. About the evaluation of sit-and-reach , level 3 decreased about 4% and level 4 increased from 1998 to 2000. In addition, the worst and level 2 decreased about 7%, and level 4 and the best increased (p<0.0001). Upon those data, we clarified the introduction and repetition of stretch exercise is significant as the preventive measure against lumbago.
This research is aimed at making female worker’s health control support system for pregnant employees being able to work safely and comfortably in appropriate work environment. And it includes the evaluation. Before having started the research, in order to grasp the status quo, the occupational health nurse interviewed other companies in the same business, regional occupational health nurse, and female employees and clarified problems and tasks which A company has faced. Upon those, we built the motherhood health control support system. And we have made a wonderful coordination among the occupational health nurse, the personnel department, an industrial doctor, and the support net-work : 4 pregnant employees ( average age at 31.5 ±3.0 years) had followed good pregnant course and delivered their babies safely. From now on, along with “the wholesome 21” and company’s action plan based on the next generation support measure promotion law, I will contribute to create the comfortable work environment in which the female employees could continue to work after having experienced the pregnancy, the delivery, and the child raising from a broader viewpoint. And I can say that we practiced the policy making, the arrangements, and the net-working very well that are the original functions of the occupational health nurse by getting this system ready.
The Safety Hygienic Committee requested the improvement after 3 workers were absent due to low back pain. The study is conducted by a health industrial nurse and 2 employees who had experienced low back pain to research the work environment and measure the operation postures. The research was conduct on the 54 male workers (average age at 46.6±9.4 years) in the printing section of A newspaper company. By the result of the study, it was found that workers often stay in a half-sitting posture while tuning-up various printing press mechanisms such as changing and adjusting ukewatashi and chrome rollers, etc. After implementing these measures, there were no longer absentees of acute low back pain. Therefore, it proves the meaningfulness of the research and improvement of the work condition and environment.
Administrative staff at university consciousness of mental health was reviewed. This review contained of fatigue, stress of mental health of administrative staff at university. Further more mental health degree of administrative staff at university was reviewed. Based on the further more review, making use of faculty development and faculty exhibition of administrative staffs are introduced and countermeasure of mental health care is effect for maintained good condition of making of full use of administrative staffs’ development and exhibition has been introduced. The formulation of the basic grounds for working condition is necessary for good mental health. Questionnaire of health of the administrative staff at university was investigated. Two health questionnaires, THI (the Total Health Index) and CFSI (Cumulative Fatigue Symptoms Index) were used for administrative staff of 406 people of 16 universities and 9 junior colleges. The total score of THI of administrative staffs were calculated and analyzed by sex, age, position, and job analyzed and discussed.In this study, THI(Total Health Index) and CFSI(Cumulative Fatigue Symptom Index) was highly effect to understand mental and physical condition of administrative staff at university.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of working table height on standing work. Seven male subjects performed the task at four different working height table conditions. The table height was set 0cm, 10cm, 20cm, and 30cm below the elbow height of each subject. The content of task was to perform construct solid objects. Biceps brachii EMG showed the maximum value in the condition was 20cm, and the minimum value was 0cm. The result of that questionnaire on the rate of easy task was at 20cm. The all mean value of trunk inclination was at the 30cm table height in all tasks. The results of this experiment showed that the trunk inclination from -5 to 5 degrees was natural working posture. As a result, the best working posture was at 20cm. However, the large trunk inclination was measured by one of the workers. So the series of experiment showed that adjusting the height of working table should be essential. Adjustment of working table height was 10cm. Then, a biomechanical calculation formula was “body height/2+7.5cm” for men, and “body height/2+5cm” for women.
【 purpose 】Female employee’s actual condition under the child care in A newspaper is investigated, and the role requested from the enterprise and the local government about child-nurturing support is examined. 【 method 】A self-registering insertion type questionnaire and half structural interview were executed to seven female employees who had the child in the baby period and the later childhood. Moreover, half structural interview was executed to two male employees. 【 result 】Most of seven female employees thought their work was challenging, and all of them hoped to work until the retirement age. When they were off work because of child’s sickness, some felt colleagues were understanding, and other were sorry for that. They did the majority of housework and the child care and received the cooperation of parents to strike a balance between home and career. They gave their children in charge to nursery school. They had dissatisfaction and demands for the child-care facility and the administrative service. 【 consideration 】We guessed seven female employees had desire for the concomitance and the enhancement of four lives which were work life, family life, social life, and individual life. It is necessary to do the distribution and the human resources management of work that they can strike a balance between home and career in the enterprise, also to strengthen the regional child-nurturing support function in the local government.
