Introduction of Mental Health Measures into a Medium-Sized Workplace and Their Evaluation

Yoshika Suzaki et.al.

At a medium-sized workplace where no mental health measures had been carried out, we conducted a multifaceted, stress-related questionnaire survey before and after mental health education, and then evaluated the results. In Our occupational health activities, we supported the company’s health management through the survey, follow up on employee’s stress-related work problems, and provided mental health education for managers and regular employees. As a result, significant differences were observed, especially among the male employees, in the following areas (there were 11 such metrics in all): lifestyle, tendency to depression, tendency to neurosis, tendency to psychosomatic symptoms, degree of apathy, and degree of satisfaction with life. In the occupational health activities, people prone to stress-related illness could be clearly identified and could then be introduced to medical institutions; moreover, through personal interviews and the mental health education, it was possible to comprehensively understand and deal with the state of employee adaptation to the workplace.

Effect of Correlated Color Temperature of LED lighting on visual performance

Misako Yamagishi et.al.

This study deals with a planning of lighting on visual performance using Light Emitting Diode (LED) luminare. In this article, it is discussed an influence of Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) of lighting characteristics when people performed visual tasks. 20 subjects (M=21.5 years old, SD=2.77) are participated in this experiment and then performed some visual tasks, including the Numerical Verification (NV) task under three CCT conditions: 2500 K, 5000 K, 8200 K. Furthermore, their mood (arousal / pleasantness) is rated using the Two Dimensional Mood Scale. Results indicate that the score of NV task shows higher under 5000 K than the other CCTs. For arousal, under 5000 K and 8200 K, results reveal strong correlation between arousal and pleasantness. In future, this study conducted for elderly people to examine preferred lighting characteristics on visual performance. Eventually, it will be found proposal of extensive lighting specification for LED as design for people at all ages.

Development of a retrofit brake for wheelchairs

Yukio OZAWA et.al.

Wheelchairs are frequently used in the field of nursing and welfare. Many wheelchairs are manually operated and have manual brakes on the left and right wheels. However, while a caretaker is providing assistance, the body of the wheelchair user can come in contact with one of the brakes. If one brake is disengaged, the wheelchair can move and cause fall.In order to reduce the number of fall accidents, the present study aimed to ascertain the amount and timing of force applied while getting in and out of a wheelchair. In addition, based on the results, we designed and fabricated a prototype of a foldable retrofit brake that can be easily attached to existing wheelchairs.

Health Monitoring System for Workers Using Facial Image

Nobuyuki Nishiuchi et.al.

In large cities where some facilities operate 24 hours a day, the importance of health of workers is a concern. If workers themselves can be aware of changes in their health, it may be possible to prevent major accidents that occur from fatigue and the state of health. The development of a health monitoring system by which workers can receive a diagnosis easily is desired. In the current study, we focused on the premises that the doctor can assess the state of health of the patient by ocular inspection, and developed a health monitoring system for workers using a facial image. In this system, the color of the skin and facial swelling was measured by image processing. The system gives the user a warning of the possibility of disease, using data of the state of the facial color or swelling. Although there is a relation between the change in facial color or swelling and the possible sickness, it is difficult for the system to identify the actual disease. In future, these data will be correlated with physiological data, such as the heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature.
